Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who passed away this afternoon in a clinic in London after a protracted illness associated with old age
The announcement was made in an terse statement signed by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, which reads:
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIR RAJI’UN.
The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, who was 82, served as Nigeria’s Head of State twice—first as a military ruler between 1983 and 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Buhari had been in London receiving medical care for an age-related ailment over the past several weeks.
A formal statement from the Presidency and details about funeral arrangements are expected later today.
Condolences have already begun to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to issue a national broadcast. Former leaders, governors, and international partners have expressed shock and sympathy, describing Buhari as “a towering figure who shaped Nigeria's modern history"
