The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget (MEPB), has convened a high-level stakeholders meeting with Community Development Council (CDC) Chairmen across the state to enhance commuter experience and strengthen public trust in traffic communication systems.
The one-day event, themed: "People’s Perception Survey of Traffic Radio Information on Commuters' Satisfaction in Lagos State," was held at the Debt Management Office Hall (DMO), Ikeja, and organised in collaboration with Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1FM and the Lagos Bureau of Statistics.
Delivering the keynote address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Olayinka Ojo, who was represented by the Director of Economic Intelligence Department, Mr. Alao Akinkunmi Oluwaseyi, emphasised the critical role of data-driven planning and public feedback in shaping a responsive and inclusive transport ecosystem.
She noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic nerve centre, faces daily challenges of congestion and unpredictability, making real-time traffic communication a vital tool in urban mobility management.
The Permanent Secretary praised Lagos Traffic Radio for its consistent delivery of real-time updates, safety tips, and alternative routes, describing the station as a “trusted voice in traffic intelligence.” She stressed that the true measure of success lies not only in the dissemination of information but in how effectively it is received, understood, and applied by the commuting public.
“The Public Perception Survey launched during the event seeks to evaluate the usefulness, timeliness, accuracy, and impact of traffic information provided by the station, while identifying barriers to access and utilisation. Insights from the survey will guide future investments, refine communication strategies, and improve service delivery”, she noted
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mrs. Bolariwa Kikelomo, represented by Director, Community Development, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Adeniji, commended the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget for its inclusive approach and strategic foresight.
She acknowledged the recognition of her Ministry as a key stakeholder in the development initiative and reaffirmed its commitment to the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, particularly the governance pillar which promotes inclusivity.
In his opening remarks, the General Manager, Lagos Traffic Radio, Mr Tayo Akanle, reflected on the station’s evolution since its inception in May 2012. “Over the past 12 years, the station has expanded its coverage beyond road traffic to include waterways and railways, aligning with the state’s THEMES Plus Development Agenda”.
He highlighted recent innovations such as live motorbike traffic reports, real-time surveillance through partnerships with the Ministry of Science and Technology, and a growing digital presence that has significantly boosted social media engagement.
Mr. Akanle revealed that the station now monitors over 300 roads via live camera feeds and is improving signal reach with a new booster station in Ikorodu, with plans to extend coverage to Lekki and other areas. He reiterated the importance of the ongoing Public Perception Survey in gathering feedback to further enhance service delivery, ensuring Lagosians continue to receive timely, accurate traffic updates across all transport modes.
"We are committed to gathering feedback to further enhance service delivery, ensuring Lagosians continue to receive timely, accurate traffic updates across all transport modes", said Mr. Tayo Akanle.
Representatives from various stakeholders, including CDC Chairmen, government officials, and community leaders, attended the meeting. The event highlighted the importance of community structures in driving grassroots development and the need for proper documentation to inform government decisions.
