SANWO-OLU REWARDS LAGOS ATHLETES

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has rewarded the victorious Team Lagos contingent for the 2025 National Youth Games held in Delta State, where the state topped the medal table for the first time in the history of the competition for under 15 athletes.

Team Lagos emerged champions of the 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba, last month, dethroning host, Delta State by winning 110 medals comprising 52 gold, 32 silver and 26 bronze medals.

At a reception held in honour of the athletes, coaches and officials at the Lagos State House, Ikeja on Friday, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the youngsters for their exceptional performance, commending the Lagos State Sports Commission under the leadership of the Director-General, Lekan Fatodu for the historic feat achieved at the games.
The sports loving Governor restated the commitment of the Lagos State Government to support young athletes to attain full potential, charging the youngsters to focus while combining sports with education.

Expressing optimism that the young boys and girls will compete at the top level at both national and international competitions in the future, Governor Sanwo-Olu promised that the state will provide adequate facilities and enhance opportunities for youth to thrive in sports.

The high point of the State Reception in honor of team Lagos athletes for the historic feat at the 2025 Youth Games was the announcement of various cash rewards for medallists, non-medallists, coaches and the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission.
The Governor rewarded each of the 41 gold medallists from the games with N500,000; and those who won gold in a team of two also getting N500,000, while gold medallists in other team sports events will get N1m.

For silver medallists, Sanwo-Olu also announced a reward of N300,000 for the 22 individual winners, just as winners in a team of two will also get N300,000, while silver medallists in team events will get N700,000.

The Governor also rewarded 19 individual bronze medallists with N250,000 each. Winners in doubles will also get N250,000 as a team, while those who won bronze in team events will get N500,000.

Other athletes who didn’t win medals got N100,000 each, 61 coaches will get N300,000 each, and the Governor appreciated the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission with the sum of N25m.

The Governor’s unprecedented gesture to host and reward athletes showed the state Government prioritising youth development to build future champions and leaders. 

Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu remarked that the reception goes beyond the incentives but creates the experience of a lifetime that will inspire the boys and girls.

He praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s belief in the potential of the youth, and his consistent support and investment in infrastructure and human development through sports.

The reception had in attendance the Chairman, House Committee on Youth, Sports and Social Development, Honorable Abiodun Orekoya; Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Honourable Mobolaji Ogunlende;Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Honorable Jamiu Alli-Balogun; Senior Special Assistant to the President, Honorable Adeyinka Adeboye and other top government officials and executives of corporate organisations.
