The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, through the Multilingual International Resource Centre (MIRC), has introduced the Adult Language Proficiency Class, designed to equip individuals with linguistic skills in foreign and indigenous languages.
The Centre offers a range of languages, including Mandarin (the most widely spoken language in China, also known as Standard Chinese or Putonghua), English, Yoruba, Arabic, French and strives to raise proficient language learners by reinforcing language skills through programmes tailored to cater for diverse needs, with flexible duration options. These include two-month intensive classes, part-time classes, and evening and weekend programmes for adults.
Speaking during a recent tour of the facility at Maryland, Ikeja, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Abisola Dokunmu Adegbite disclosed that the Centre aims to promote language learning and cultural exchange through various activities such as language exchange programmes, competitions, and online classes.
According to the Permanent Secretary, “The Multilingual International Resource Centre (MIRC) is a leading language education institution dedicated to promoting language learning, cultural exchange, and literacy in multiple languages. Established in 2009, the Centre has been at the forefront of language education in Lagos State, providing high-quality language programmes and services to individuals and organisations.”
Dokunmu-Adegbite affirmed that MIRC's students have consistently excelled in international exams, including DELF, TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français), and Canadian Qualifying Exams, enabling them to pursue professional careers globally.
She disclosed that the Centre currently has classes running and offers additional services, including interpretation and translation in multiple languages, while it stands as the official interpreter for the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
The Adult Language Proficiency Class is designed to accommodate diverse needs, offering flexible duration options to suit different lifestyles.
