The Coalition for Local Election Administration Reform (CLEAR) has called for closer collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to address lingering electoral challenges and ensure the successful conduct of the February 2026 Area Council elections.
CLEAR’s spokesperson, Princess Hamman-Obels, made the call on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, during an advocacy visit to the INEC FCT office. She said the engagement, coming barely months to the polls, was aimed at identifying critical areas where technical support and strategic partnerships could enhance electoral administration and improve voter experience.
According to her, the forthcoming Area Council elections are of significant electoral value, noting that outcomes and operational approaches from the FCT would likely serve as a reference point for State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) in the conduct of local government elections across the country.
Princess Hamman-Obels stressed the need for deliberate efforts to decongest polling units, describing congestion as a recurring challenge that has undermined efficiency and voter confidence in previous elections. She argued that addressing the issue early would contribute to smoother election-day operations and improved public trust.
The coalition also underscored the importance of early and sustained voter education in the lead-up to the elections. It expressed readiness to support INEC’s voter enlightenment drive through the dissemination of the commission’s prototype jingles and flyers, aimed at fostering broader citizen engagement and awareness.
In a related development, the Youth Empowerment Solutions Initiative (YES) also paid an advocacy visit to the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), INEC FCT, pledging support for initiatives targeted at increasing youth participation in the forthcoming Area Council elections. The group reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the interests of young voters and strengthening their involvement in the electoral process.
