LAGOS DSVA/ NYCN ORGANISE TECHNOLOGY-FACILITATED SGBV SENSITISATION

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in partnership with the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State, has organised a sensitisation seminar on Technology-Facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (TFSGBV) on Saturday, 29th November 2025, at the Youth House, Yaba.

The event formed part of activities commemorating the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, aimed at raising awareness about the dangers associated with digital spaces and equipping young people with strategies to identify, prevent, and report online abuses.

The session was moderated by Ms Anedo Deborah and facilitated by Mr Tosin Akinde, both staff of DSVA.

The Chairman of NYCN, Lagos State, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim delivered the welcome address, encouraging the participants and emphasising the importance of digital safety for today’s youth.

During the engagement, participants were taken through various forms of Technology-Facilitated Violence, including cyberstalking, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, online harassment, impersonation, digital blackmail, sextortion, and other emerging online threats. The facilitators shared practical examples and real-life scenarios to deepen understanding of how these violations occur and the speed at which they can escalate.

The youth were further educated on safety precautions and digital protection measures such as adjusting privacy settings, avoiding unsafe online interactions, securing passwords, identifying red flags, and knowing appropriate reporting channels. Emphasis was placed on responsible digital behaviour, respect for consent in online interactions, and the collective responsibility of young people in promoting safer virtual communities.

Additionally, the session highlighted the impact of TFSGBV on individuals and society, outlining its psychological, social, and economic consequences. The facilitator, Mr Akinde, stressed the importance of continuous awareness, peer education, and the active involvement of youth leaders in curbing digital gender-based violence across communities.

Participants expressed deep appreciation to DSVA and NYCN Lagos for organising a platform that directly addresses the digital experiences of young people. They also pledged to become advocates for safer digital practices within their communities.

The programme concluded with an interactive Q&A session, group photographs, and renewed calls for strengthened collaboration in combating all forms of SGBV, both online and offline.
