NICOWA HOLDS LANDMARK 2025 CONVENTION, UNVEILS NEW LEADERSHIP AND CELEBRATES ACHIEVEMENTS AT GALA NIGHT.

 


The Nigerian Correctional Officers’ Wives Association (NICOWA) successfully concluded its 2025 National Convention, a landmark gathering which assembled delegates from all Zones and Commands across the Federation for days of deliberation, leadership transition, capacity building and celebration of service.


At the Opening Ceremony of the Convention, attended by the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, MFR, mni, his Management Team alongside other top personalities, the NICOWA National President, Mrs. Victoria Nwakuche, delivered a warm and inspiring welcome address, appreciating delegates for their commitment  while emphasizing the importance of unity, empowerment and continuous support for families within the Correctional community. 


In his remarks, the Controller General reaffirmed support for NICOWA’s developmental programmes and welfare initiatives noting that when women come together, great things happen. 


The ceremony featured a lecture presentation by the Guest Speaker, Mrs Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, who delivered an insightful paper on the theme, “Women Navigating Modern-Day Pressures: The Role of Women in Tackling Societal Issues”, inspiring members to embrace innovation and collaboration to strengthen family support systems within the Correctional community.


The Convention culminated in a colourful Gala Dinner, graced by the Wife of the Honourable Minister of Interior, Mrs. Abimbola Tunji-Ojo, who served as the Special Guest of Honour. In her Special Remarks, she reaffirmed her support for NICOWA and commended the Association for their commitment to welfare, education and community support and encouraged the new executives to remain steadfast in advancing programmes that will promote stability and wellbeing for families within the Correctional ecosystem.


The event also recorded the presence of counterparts from Officers’ Wives Associations of the military and paramilitary agencies; DEPOWA, NAOWA, IMMOWA, ROSOWA and FOWA, alongside past Presidents of NICOWA who delivered inspiring goodwill messages.


Earlier during the Convention, detailed reports were presented by delegates from Zones and State Chapters, highlighting progress, innovations and identified needs in advancing the welfare and empowerment of Correctional officers’ families nationwide.


In line with NICOWA’s constitution, the outgoing National Executive Council was formally dissolved and a new set of National Officers elected. The newly elected executives were subsequently sworn in, marking the beginning of a new chapter of leadership dedicated to expanding NICOWA’s impact and building on the successes of past administrations.


Highlights of the Gala Dinner included; Presentation of Awards and recognition to the Special Guest of Honour, CG NCoS and his Management team; and past Presidents of NICOWA. It also featured Cultural and contemporary dance performances; Goodwill messages and a vibrant atmosphere, celebrating unity, service, and renewed commitment to the Association.
