The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has called on women across Nigeria to boldly embrace responsibility and step confidently into leadership roles that shape policy, institutions, and national development.
The Governor gave the charge in his goodwill message delivered by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. 'Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin at the 2025 Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR) Annual Leadership and Mentoring Conference.
Speaking weekend at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the future belongs to women who are willing to take responsibility, lead with courage, and influence decisions that shape society. He noted that the theme, “Claiming Our Future: Women in Leadership and Policy Transformation,” aptly provided a fitting backdrop for his message.
He emphasised that leadership is not defined by titles but by influence, accountability, and the readiness to make a lasting difference. He said
“Let us not shy away from leadership roles. Step forward, voice your opinions, and take responsibility for shaping the policies that determine the progress of our communities and our nation.”
The Governor commended WISCAR for its consistency in nurturing women who lead with purpose and highlighted the success of the newly launched Women in Law Mentoring Programme (WILMP) supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He described it as a transformational leadership pipeline equipping mentees with the confidence and skills needed to influence governance and drive reform.
Governor Sanwo-Olu said there is 50 per cent female representation in the composition of the state's body of Permanent Secretaries to strengthen governance systems and promote inclusive development, while women head Ministries, Agencies and Departments.
Reaffirming Lagos State’s commitment to women’s leadership, the Governor stated that the State will continue to create opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to governance and economic growth, as societies flourish when women lead. When women take responsibility, institutions become stronger.
Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated WISCAR Chairperson and founder, Mrs. Amina Oyagbola and her team on hosting another impactful conference. He commended its unwavering dedication to developing leaders who take initiative and drive change. He expressed confidence that the 2025 conference would inspire renewed commitment to leadership responsibility and policy transformation.
Highlight was the recognition of the Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola, with WISCAR's award for her contributions to education and women’s advancement.
