Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the conversion and renaming of the Second Chance Girls/Women Skill Acquisition School, Biu, to Second Chance School, Biu (Frosel & Son), in a move aimed at strengthening inclusive education and expanding skills development opportunities for women and persons with special needs.
The Governor made the announcement on Wednesday during the commissioning of the facility located along the Galdimare–Gombe Road in Biu, which was executed under the supervision of the Borno State Ministry of Education.
Governor Zulum commended the management and partners of the institution, particularly Frosel & Son, for their vision, resilience and sustained commitment to empowering deaf persons and women without formal education through vocational training and life-enhancing skills acquisition programmes.
He stressed the importance of sustainability, adequate funding and transparent screening processes to ensure the long-term success and integrity of the school.
“Adequate budgetary provisions must be made to meet the needs of this institution. The screening exercise is extremely important, and before the expiration of the current training period, another batch must be carefully selected, because the integrity of the programme depends on proper selection,” the Governor said.
Governor Zulum further assured that the state government would provide start-up kits to graduating trainees to enable them to establish livelihoods and become self-reliant upon completion of their programmes.
In addition, he announced that 200 youths from Biu would be considered for admission and employment opportunities, noting that community leaders, in collaboration with local government authorities, would be responsible for identifying qualified beneficiaries. According to him, priority would be given to green recruiters with a minimum of diploma qualification, while some selected beneficiaries would undergo further training at university level.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to promoting inclusive education, skills acquisition and empowerment initiatives across Borno State.
The commissioning of the Second Chance School, Biu, represents another milestone in the Zulum administration’s ongoing efforts to expand access to education, promote self-reliance and improve the socio-economic wellbeing of women and other vulnerable groups in the state.
