As part of the efforts of the Sanwo-olu led administration to continue to provide quality infrastructure and safe environment in Lagos public schools, it has promised to replace the newly demolished distressed classroom blocks at the Mainland senior high school, Fadeyi with an ultra-modern two18 classroom blocks.
This was disclosed by the Chairman, Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS), Mr Hakeem Smith, during a routine site inspection to the affected school. He revealed that, the Sanwo-olu administration prioritizes the safety of our pupils in the public schools and has directed the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABCA), to embark on the demolition of two distressed buildings at the Mainland senior high school.
According to him, a distress call was made to the Lagos state government recently by the paramount ruler of Igbobi Sabe in the Yaba LCDA, Oba Owolabi Adeniyi and the Building Collapse Protection Guild (BCPG), a professional body in the built environment, set up to prevent incessant building collapse in the state, which prompted Mr Governor to swiftly respond to the clarion call.
Smith hinted that, the distressed buildings were among the old buildings in the school before SCRPS was re-inaugurated by Mr Governor in 2019, stressing that, an integrity test was conducted by Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory (LSMTL) on all the three buildings in the school and discovered only one building passed the test. He noted that an I-shaped 18 classroom block with 30 toilets facility was constructed in the same school last year.
The SCRPS chairman urged the BCPG members not to relent in their efforts by voluntarily monitoring distressed public buildings in the state, appealing to them to extend their searchlight to the entire BCPG cells in the state and not limit their coverage to the Yaba environment alone, promised that Lagos state government is equally available for continued partnership with them.
Similarly, the coordinator, BCPG Yaba cell, Engr. Adebayo Ogunrinde stated that, the professional body was created to monitor distressed buildings, especially public buildings in the state, in order to avert issues of collapse building. He assured that plans are in top gear to cover the entire state in its monitoring exercise and promised to continue to collaborate with government to ensure safety in all public buildings.
The paramount ruler of Igbobi-sabe, Oba Owolabi Adeniyi commended His Excellency, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu, for the swift intervention in ordering the demolition of the two distressed buildings and immediately approving the construction of brand new two 18 classroom blocks. He therefore, urged government to intensify in its project monitoring and supervision exercises which is the only way to ensure quality projects delivery.
