WE MUST BE MINDFUL OF A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT DURING SALLAH CELEBRATIONS -LASG





 …….Reiterates ban on sale of Rams, livestock on Highways, Roads, Medians


The Lagos State Government on Monday enjoined residents to be mindful of a cleaner Environment as all muslim faithfuls celebrate Ed El Kabir (Ileya Festival) later this week.


Addressing the media  during a parley held in his office, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab said the state government remains responsible for enlightening residents on the need to demonstrate utmost love to their environment even as they celebrate the eid


Wahab while wishing all Muslim faithfuls’ a happy Sallah celebration, urged everyone to ensure that waste generated during the Sallah  Celebrations is appropriately bagged and disposed at designated points for LAWMA pick up.


He gave a commitment to Lagosians that the Ministry and its Agency in charges of waste, Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is still on course to ensure that it rids Lagos of refuse heaps adding that the environment, being relevant to all, should be properly maintained to attain environmental sustainability and socio -economic wellbeing.


Meanwhile, Wahab also reminded Lagosians that the Law against street trading is still in force, stressing that the State Government would not tolerate any form of street trading which includes display of rams and other livestock on major highways, road medians, lay-byes, gardens and parks  across the State.


He said that while it was not unusual for traders to take advantage of the season to market and sell livestock animals, it must be done without defacing the state or compromising the wellness and wellbeing of Lagosians.


He warned residents who were in the habit of abusing the environment through different forms of infractions such as erecting illegal stalls, engaging in street trading, keeping unsanitized environment, converting open spaces to dump sites, etc. to desist from these bad environmental behaviours or be ready to face serious sanctions from government.


“Let me restate government’s resolve to firmly apply regulatory and enforcement measures against contraventions of environmental laws and regulations;

I enjoin residents to voluntarily comply with the extant State environmental laws” he said.


Wahab said government will continue to be at the fore front of the campaign for a healthy people and cleaner environment, by encouraging Lagosians to desist from acts that could have negative impacts on the environment. 


He urged Lagosians to take advantage of the various relaxation points, parks and gardens across the state during the celebrations to enjoy the ambience for leisure, funfair and relaxation.
