The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Saturday joined the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise along the Itire Road corridor in Surulere, reaffirming the Authority's commitment to cleaner communities through stronger stakeholder collaboration and responsible waste management practices.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the Authority would continue to strengthen waste evacuation, environmental monitoring, community engagement, and enforcement as part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental sanitation across Lagos State.
He noted that environmental sustainability could only be achieved through sustained collaboration between government, residents, businesses, community leaders, and other critical stakeholders.
According to him, cleaner neighbourhoods begin with responsible environmental behaviour, urging residents to properly bag and store their waste for collection by assigned PSP operators and desist from indiscriminate waste disposal on roads, medians, drainage channels, and other unauthorised locations.
Dr. Gbadegesin said: "Environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility. While government will continue to strengthen waste collection systems and invest in infrastructure, lasting success depends on the willingness of residents and communities to support these efforts through responsible waste disposal practices."
The LAWMA boss reiterated that the Authority remained committed to improving service delivery through enhanced waste collection systems, stronger enforcement, continuous public enlightenment, and strategic partnerships.
He disclosed that LAWMA was expanding innovative waste collection solutions, including the deployment of tricycle compactors in areas inaccessible to conventional compactor trucks, while supporting broader government initiatives aimed at strengthening recycling, material recovery, and circular economy programmes.
Dr. Gbadegesin also appealed to residents to report service gaps and environmental infractions through established LAWMA channels instead of resorting to illegal dumping or patronising unauthorised waste collectors.
He added that the continued support of local government authorities, Community Development Associations, traditional institutions, market associations, transport unions, and residents remained critical to achieving cleaner communities across the State.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who led the sanitation exercise, reiterated the Lagos State Government's commitment to environmental sustainability and urged residents to embrace environmental sanitation as a daily civic responsibility.
The exercise featured waste evacuation, environmental inspection, community sensitisation, and stakeholder engagement, reflecting the collective resolve of the Lagos State Government and LAWMA to promote cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable communities.
