The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Agency (LNSA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRA) to deploy facial recognition and fingerprint technology aimed at enhancing suspect identification and strengthening security operations across Lagos State.
Speaking during the partnership meeting, the General Manager of LASRA, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, explained that the Agency’s biometric database is designed to prevent multiple registrations by identifying the unique facial and fingerprint features of each resident. She noted that LASRA’s database aligns with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) framework and complements the national identity system, particularly for residents who are yet to obtain a National Identification Number (NIN).
The General Manager of LNSA, Prince Dr. Ifalade Oyekan, FISN, disclosed that discussions had been held with LASRA to integrate biometric technology into the Agency’s operational framework. He revealed that LASRA donated facial recognition devices and rechargeable fingerprint scanners, which will be deployed to identify suspects and offenders apprehended during security operations.
Prince Oyekan stated that the introduction of the technology will greatly improve forensic investigations by allowing officers to accurately link fingerprints with facial identities, particularly in the case of repeat offenders. He noted that images obtained from the Agency's drone surveillance operations can also be matched with biometric records, thereby enhancing the efficiency and precision of suspect identification. He further disclosed that the Agency's Forensic Unit will coordinate and supervise the biometric identification process.
Describing the collaboration as a significant milestone in intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and public safety, Prince Oyekan expressed appreciation to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, for their unwavering commitment to leveraging technology and supporting strategic initiatives that continue to strengthen the security architecture of Lagos State.
