The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, today led the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in honoring the gallant operatives of the NPF Special Intervention Squad (SIS) and the Force Intelligence Department-Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The formal reception followed the successful conclusion of a high-stakes, 56-day tactical operation in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, which secured the safe release of seven (7) teachers and thirty-nine (39) pupils held captive for nearly two months.
While celebrating the team's tactical precision and operational resilience, the occasion was solemnized by the loss of a true patriot. Sergeant John Jerome Abena, an officer attached to the FID-IRT, paid the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty during the rescue mission. Expressing his deepest condolences to the family of the fallen officer, IGP Disu stated that Sergeant Abena's selflessness and gallantry epitomized the highest ideals of service to the fatherland, assuring that his sacrifice will never be forgotten and that the Force remains unyielding in its commitment to providing sustainable support and welfare to his family.
Addressing the rescue team, which worked in close synergy with sister security agencies, IGP Disu commended their exceptional bravery and patriotism. He described the successful outcome as clear evidence of the NPF's evolving, intelligence-led capability to safeguard lives and combat violent crime across the federation. The IGP confirmed that while the rescued victims were not present at the reception, they are currently receiving comprehensive medical and psychological support to aid their recovery.
IGP Disu emphasized that under his administration, the welfare, motivation, and recognition of personnel, especially those deployed to high-risk operations, remain a top institutional priority. He noted that honoring these sacrifices is a core moral obligation, stating profoundly, "A policeman is first of all a human being."
The Inspector-General charged all officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to remain resolute, vigilant, and uncompromising in the ongoing fight against criminality. The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its unwavering commitment to securing every corner of the nation, protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians, and continuously prioritizing the operational welfare of its personnel nationwide.
