As part of activities marking the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) on Friday, September 11, 2026, held an Advocacy Walk on Lagos Island to raise awareness and strengthen collective action against domestic and sexual violence.
The Advocacy Walk was flagged off by Hon. Lara Oyekan Olumegbon, Member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Lagos Island, who, in her remarks, emphasised the need for sustained advocacy, community involvement and collective responsibility in tackling domestic and sexual violence.
She noted that ending violence requires the active participation of government, communities, families, and individuals while encouraging residents to speak up, report cases, and support efforts aimed at protecting survivors. She was joined by Hon. Nurudeen Yunus Abiodun, APC candidate for Lagos State House of Assembly, Constituency II.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District IV, highlighted the critical role of the health sector in responding to cases of domestic and sexual violence and the need for survivors to receive timely, compassionate and appropriate care.
Speaking on the significance of the walk, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said the Agency remains committed to taking the message of prevention and zero tolerance for domestic and sexual violence directly to communities.
She noted that the Awareness Month provides an opportunity to deepen conversations around domestic and sexual violence, encourage victims and survivors to speak up, and remind residents that everyone has a role to play in preventing violence and supporting those affected.
The walk commenced from SURA Primary Health Centre (PHC) and ended at the Lagos Island Local Government, where they were warmly welcomed by the Executive Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, Hon. Prince Taiwo Ajibade Oyekan.
The walk brought together government officials, stakeholders, advocates, community members and other participants who marched through the community with messages promoting prevention, reporting and support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
The Advocacy Walk further reinforced the Lagos State Government’s commitment to sustained public awareness, prevention, survivor support and coordinated action towards ending domestic and sexual violence in Lagos State.
