The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has sealed multiple buildings in Victoria Island and Lekki, Eti-Osa LG of Lagos State for violations of building regulations.
The enforcement actions were aimed at addressing disregard for government building regulations that prioritized Safety, structural integrity, and compliance with the urban planning standards.
Most of the buildings were sealed due to several irregularities, including no evidence of building Plan approval and Non-compliance with mandated setbacks.
Some of these buildings were also constructed on drainage channels, road setback, while some house owners did not give any space for ventilation and ease of access in case of emergency.
Engr. Adeyiga Adelekan, who led LASBCA’s Special Enforcement Team emphasized the importance of adhering to building codes, particularly setbacks and ventilation requirements.
"These regulations ensure that buildings not only meet structural standards but also contribute to a safer, more livable urban environment" he added.
LABSCA General Manager, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, said the State Government would not allow compromise in the built industry because of its effect on human safety, noting that "adherence to the Building Plan Approval granted Owners/Developers in both Victoria Island and Lekki Areas of the State showed blatant disregard for the building standards and whoever that contravenes the law would be made to face the law" he warned
He warned house owners/ Developers against violating government regulations on road setback, noting that it is important to keep space for setback during planing for security and safety.
"A building constructed without adequate setbacks not only limiting ventilation and privacy but also hinders the possibility of rescue operations during emergencies," he stated.
"We must maintain stringent standards to ensure Lagos is a safe place to live and work." He added.
He reitairated LASBCA's committed to enforcing Building Regulations across Lagos State to curb the rise of illegal and unsafe constructions.
