LAGOS ASSEMBLY SPOKESPERSON,HON OGUNDIPE COMMENDS POLICE FOR RECENT INTERVENTIONS AND STRENGTHENING PUBLIC SAFETY

The lawmaker representing Oshodi-Isolo Constituency-01 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, popularly known as Omoj’omolo, on Tuesday moved a motion under Matters of Urgent Public Importance to commend the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Police for its recent interventions and efforts in strengthening public safety across the state.

Hon. Ogundipe, who is also the House Spokesperson and Chairman, House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, praised the command for demonstrating professionalism, resilience, and commitment in the face of security challenges.

“Mr. Speaker, Honourable Colleagues, I rise to commend the recent responsiveness and dedication of the Lagos State Police Command. From the viral incident at Excel College, Ejigbo, to the Ibeju-Lekki saga, the daylight robbery on Allen Avenue, Ikeja, and the recent unrest at Oworonshoki, our officers acted swiftly and decisively. Their professionalism under the leadership of CP Adegoke Fayoade Jimoh is highly commendable,” he stated.

Highlighting the Allen Avenue incident, Hon. Ogundipe recalled how a businessman was robbed in broad daylight but the police quickly launched an investigation. By September 19, 2025, operatives had arrested John Samuel at his hideout in Epe. Samuel, who had just completed a six-year prison sentence for armed robbery, was promptly apprehended, reflecting what the lawmaker described as “the diligence and capacity of our officers in tackling crime under difficult circumstances.”

While applauding these interventions, the lawmaker emphasized the need for further measures to consolidate public safety in Lagos. These include:
Community Awareness: Promoting security as a shared responsibility through public education on reporting mechanisms and safety practices.

Proactive Prevention: Instituting safety protocols in schools, markets, and public spaces supported by surveillance and risk assessments.

Sustained Investment: Expanding support for modern policing through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund.

Hon. Ogundipe also cautioned on the use of social media in security matters, noting that while it can expose wrongdoing and aid law enforcement when used positively, its misuse may create panic and worsen situations.

The motion received wide support from other lawmakers.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams (Eti-Osa II), appreciated Hon. Ogundipe for raising such a vital matter, noting that the commendation was timely and encouraging.

Also speaking, Hon. Shabi Abdulrasheed (Mainland II) observed that Nigerians often criticize the police for their shortcomings, but rarely acknowledge their successes. He congratulated the mover of the motion for recognizing the efforts of the police at this critical time.
