Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, alongside fifteen lawmakers, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made during Friday’s plenary session, marking a major shift in the state’s political landscape.
Addressing the chamber, Amaewhule said their decision was driven by what he described as a “clear division” within the PDP, noting that deep internal conflicts had made it difficult for them to function effectively.
He stated that the defection would allow the lawmakers to align with a political structure they believe offers greater stability and supports effective governance for their constituencies.
According to the Speaker, the situation within the PDP in Rivers State had become “unsustainable” and no longer conducive to legislative progress.
