The Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ikoyi, on Saturday, 11 April 2026, successfully matriculated twenty-nine (29) inmates into National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), in a significant stride towards strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration efforts within the custodial system.

The ceremony was attended by the representative of the Lagos State Controller of Corrections, the NOUN Desk Officer/Principal, a representative of the Wife of the Lagos State Governor, the NOUN Lagos State Coordinator, as well as the Officer in Charge of the Ikoyi Custodial Centre, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) Ebereonwu Julius Ogueri.

The matriculating inmates comprise twenty-three (23) Bachelor of Science (BSc) students, two (2) Masters degree students, two (2) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) students, and one (1) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate, reflecting a diverse range of academic pursuits.

This initiative underscores the critical role of education in the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates. Access to quality education equips inmates with relevant knowledge, practical skills, and positive values necessary for personal transformation. It also contributes significantly to reducing recidivism, fostering discipline, enhancing self-worth, and preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society upon release.

The Nigerian Correctional Service reaffirms its unwavering commitment to providing avenues for academic advancement and vocational development as part of its core mandate of rehabilitation, reformation, and reintegration.
