Heavy Rainfall: LAWMA and AWAMN Leadership Conduct Inspection at Olusosun Landfill to Alleviate Operational Challenges

LAGOS — In an effort to address the operational difficulties caused by persistent rainfall, the senior leadership of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN) undertook a joint high-level evaluation visit to the Olusosun Landfill.

The delegation was headed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, along with the Executive Director of Finance, Mr. Kunle Adebiyi, and the National President of AWAMN, Mr. Olugbenga Adebola.

This emergency on-site assessment aimed to evaluate ongoing mitigation measures intended to stabilize the landfill’s terrain, improve turnaround times, and maintain seamless waste management services throughout Lagos despite seasonal heavy rains.

Persistent and heavy rainfall consistently emerges as a significant obstacle for urban waste management, profoundly affecting landfill logistics. Inclement weather often impairs access roads within disposal sites, rendering the terrain hazardous and muddy for heavy-duty vehicles. Consequently, this results in delays for Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, leading to an accumulation of uncollected waste in residential and commercial areas.

During the assessment, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin underlined the importance of the visit in accelerating engineering interventions at the site. He stated that stabilizing the tipping platforms and reinforcing internal roads with hardcore materials are top priorities to prevent any slowdown in waste disposal operations.

This joint inspection exemplifies a coordinated effort between the state regulatory authority and private operators to protect public health. The presence of the National President of AWAMN, Mr. Olugbenga Adebola, highlighted the private sector’s dedication to collaborating on practical, real-time solutions to alleviate logistical bottlenecks currently impacting waste compactors. Securing funding for these emergency measures remains essential to sustain progress.

As the rainy season persists, the partnership between LAWMA and AWAMN will be critical in preventing widespread disruptions to waste services. Authorities have assured residents that mitigation strategies—including continuous capping, intensive drainage clearance within the facility, and deployment of specialized equipment—will be maintained to ensure Lagos remains clean and resilient amidst climate challenges.
